Great Gatsby nails

Sunday night is nails night!

The Great Gatsby movie comes out in Aus on May 30, so there are tonnes of art deco/geometric nails floating around on nail blogs and instagram right now.

This is the opening credit for the film, and the inspiration for my black and gold Great Gatsby nails:

I’ve never tried nails that require a lot of striping tape, but I already had the tape on hand (I got mine from ebay), so why not give it a go!

Are you ready for a picture-heavy post?! :)

This is what I used to create my look:

image

I started with OPI Chip Skip, then Julep Basecoat.

Then I used 2 coats of Kleancolor ‘Gold Bright':

Plus a coat of Julep ‘Oscar’ gold glitter topcoat:

Once dry, I used striping tape to mask out my design. You have to remember which order you put the tape on, so you can take it off in the opposite order! Once taped I put on one coat of L’Oréal Resist & Shine 737 (black with a subtle gold sheen to it). I used tweezers to pull the tape off, it’s easier to use tweezers when you’re working with such thin tape. Tip: You have to pull the tape off while the polish is still wet. This gives a nice crisp line. :)

This is how I striped each finger starting from the pinky backwards!

The aftermath:

Lol! Look at all those itty bitty bits of tape I used!
Ps. I always lay a piece of paper down on my work area – it makes cleaning up faster and easier!

These have got to be one of my favourite nails! I think they turned out great! The black and gold combo is classy, if I don’t say so myself!

And striping tape makes it easy to get your right hand crisp as well – when I do freehand, my right hand always turns out slightly mankier than my left. Lol!

LA Dodgers Baseball Nails

The girls at work suggested I do some sports themed nails. I thought baseball nails would be pretty cute, with the red stitching of the ball and all, so that’s what I did!

I chose the LA Dodgers because I had been wearing my LA Bones jumper during the week and I thought the LA logo would be pretty doable!

First I laid down my base colours:

image

First I used OPI Chip Skip, then Julep basecoat.

The red is L’Oréal Activate. The blue is Orly Royal Navy. The white is OPI Alpine Snow. I used OPI RapiDry for the topcoat.

Once dry, I used my white Stripe Rite nail art polish to hand draw the LA logo.

Then I used a tiny nail art brush dipped in a dot of red nail polish to draw the baseball stitching on my ring finger:

And this is the finished product:

image

I love it! It’s a simple mani, but the red, white and blue are really bold and complimentary. I love how the LA logo came out! That’s probably my favourite bit!

I have already got requests for NY Yankees & Chicago Bulls nails… but their logos are another degree of difficulty! Lol!

Mother’s day nails

Couldn’t go to Mother’s Day yum cha with ratty nails, so did these real quick:

image

I didn’t realise it when I bought them, but the OPI mini’s I bought were from the Spiderman collection! Lol!

The blue is OPI Into the Night:

The greenish gold is OPI Just Spotted the Lizard:

The glitter topcoat is Julep Paris:

It’s quite a cute glitter with pastel holographic hex glitter in it.

And this is me and Mum at yum cha. I instagramed her. She doesn’t know what instagram is. Lol!

Cinco de Mayo nails

I’m back!

Well, last week I basically had nail disaster week, where every one of my nails decided to snap off, so I had to cut them all down and start again!

As it is the 5th of May today (and I had mexican dinner last night), I was inspired to do Cinco de Mayo nails.

Cinco de Mayo is not something that is celebrated in Australia, but it commemorates the day the Mexican Army had it’s victory against the French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

History lesson aside (!), this is what I did to create my look:

I laid my base colours down…

image

I did a green ombre on my thumb using Beauty Attitude nail enamel in Lime Light + Julep in Popova + OPI in Crown Me Already. I wanted it to look like a salt rimmed martini:

image

On my index finger, I used L’Oréal Jet set in Hasty + Stripe Rite nail art polish in black to draw a mustache on:

image

On my middle finger, I used L’Oréal Resist & Shine in 732 (darkest purple) + RapiDry topcoat + nail glue + little square domed studs to make a 3D cross:

image

On my ring finger, I used Revlon Tangerine + OPI Alpine Snow + various Stripe Rite polishes to draw a Day of the Dead skull:

image

On my pinky, I attempted (badly) to do a Mexican flag in OPI Alpine Snow, Julep Popova + L’Oréal Activate:

And this is how it turned out:

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Sinful Colors now at Target

Oh happy day…

I was out shopping with Mum yesterday and we were in the make up section of Target and what do I see?

A whole stand of Sinful Colors:

image

image

They’re one of my favorite US nail polish brands… and better yet, they retail for only $4.95 a bottle.

So glad I do not have to get these off ebay anymore.

The bad bit is that I am so tempted to go and buy one of every colour!

Reverse Mani

Sunday quickie cos it’s late…

Tonight I tried out Orly’s Magnetic polish in “Opposites Attract”.

It’s a navy/sapphire blue that looks violet under flash:

image

These are their instructions, I couldn’t take photos of myself doing this, cos this mani takes both hands!

image

So, you do one nail at a time and while the polish is still wet, you hold the magnet (comes with the polish) as close as you can to the nail, without touching it, for 10 seconds.

It was pretty hard – I got too close and touched multiple nails and had to start over again! I thought the magnetic pattern was going to be stronger:

image

Some other bloggers got really defined crosses, so either I’m doing something wrong or I got a dud magnet! Lol!

Anyhow, the magnetic pattern wasn’t “enough” for me, so I decided to do a reverse mani. I taped off semi circles at the bottoms of my nails:

image

And painted them Kleancolor Pearl Silver:

image

I painted Loreal Activate (Red) on the semi circles on my ring fingers:

image

Under flash you can really see the violet/magnetic cross pattern:

image

Under flash, my colour combo reminds me of Wonder Woman’s underpants.

LOL!

Sunday Style

My nails are famous!

Lol!

Every week I instagram my nails and hashtag them with #sundaystyleloves, amongst other tags. Each week the Sunday Style (the weekend mag that comes with the Sunday Herald Sun) pick a few pics and publish them.

They must have liked my leopard nails because I got in the mag today!

Yay me!
